How to write wedding vows

The Complete Guide to Writing Your Wedding Promises/Vows.

Here you will find a complete guide to writing wedding vows.

Wedding vows, also called vows, are an emotional and meaningful moment in the wedding ceremony. They are the perfect opportunity to express your deepest and most sincere feelings for your partner, and to share with everyone present the love and commitment you have for each other. Writing wedding vows may seem like a challenge, but with a little time and thought, you can create statements that will be unforgettable for you and your guests.

To start writing your wedding vows

1. Reflect on your feelings
Before you start writing, take some time to reflect on your feelings towards your partner. What makes your relationship special? What unique qualities do you love about your better half? What do you hope for your future together? These reflections will help you set the tone and content of your vows.

2. Be authentic
Wedding vows should be authentic and reflect your personality. Avoid using overly complex or poetic phrases if they do not match your communication style. Sincerity is what matters most at this time.

3. Structure of promises
A common way to structure wedding vows is to start with a declaration of love, followed by a few key points you want to focus on. You can talk about the special moments you have shared, the challenges you have overcome together and the hopes you have for your future.

4. Use concrete examples
To make your promises more tangible and meaningful, use concrete examples from your relationship. Tell anecdotes that show mutual love, support and understanding. These examples will make your promises more engaging and realistic.

5. Make Reference to the Future
Marriage vows are not only about the past, but also about the future you intend to build together. Talk about your aspirations for your married life, the adventures you wish to undertake and the goals you want to achieve together.

6. Modification and Simplicity
Once you have written your promises, re-read them carefully and make any changes. Make sure the words are clear and the message is cohesive. Keep in mind that promises should not be too long; try to maintain a length that is meaningful without being verbose.

7. Try reading them aloud
Reading your vows aloud will give you an idea of how they sound and how they will be perceived by your guests. Make sure the rhythm is natural and the tone is appropriate for the occasion.

8. Exercise
If you feel nervous about reading vows in front of an audience, practise beforehand. Read them to a trusted friend or in front of a mirror. This practice will help you feel more confident and pronounce the words with conviction.

9. Emotions and connection
During the reading of the vows, allow your emotions to surface. Don't be afraid to show your vulnerability and the love you feel. This authenticity will create a deeper connection with your partner and those present at the ceremony. Don't be afraid to cry, make others laugh, these will be moments you will remember all your life.

10. Keep a copy
Avoid writing your vows on a printed, folded sheet... These words are important and it is important to preserve a couple, buying small booklets or having them made is definitely the best option. This will be a precious reminder of your big day and your commitment to your partner.

Examples of wedding vows

Here you will find a collection of some examples of wedding vows, use them as a guide or to start inspiring you...

Example 1: Emotional and Intimate

“Since I met you, my life has changed in ways I could never have imagined. With each passing day, my love for you grows deeper. I promise to love you unconditionally, to be your support in difficult times and to share the joys of every triumph. I will be your best friend, your companion in adventures and your eternal love. With you by my side, I am not afraid to face what the future holds.”

Example 2: Optimist and Adventurous

“Looking back, I see a path full of laughter, adventure and growth together. Looking ahead, I see an even brighter and more exciting future. I promise to respect our differences, to approach challenges as opportunities and to always look for the bright side. Be assured that I will be your partner in conquering new goals and creating unforgettable memories.”

Example 3: Committed and Unconditional

“In good and bad circumstances, in joys and sorrows, I promise to be by your side, always. I promise to listen carefully to you, to respect your opinions and to work together to overcome every obstacle. I will be your safe haven, your strength when you are weak and your constant love at every stage of life. My promise is forever.”

Example 4: Creative and Playful

“I promise to keep looking for new ways to make you smile, even on the greyest of days. I promise to nurture our sense of adventure and discover the world around us together. We will face each day as a new chapter in our story, full of laughter, hugs and many adventures.”

Example 5: Deep and Spiritual

“Deep in my heart, I know that our love is a precious gift. I promise to cultivate this gift with gratitude and respect. I will be your partner on the path of spiritual growth, supporting you in your goals and aspirations. I promise to always seek wisdom in our love and nurture our connection with kindness and compassion.”

Remember that these are just ideas to inspire you. Wedding vows should reflect your unique relationship and the feelings you have for your she/he. Customise your vows according to what is true for the two of you and make them authentic and meaningful.

When to read your vows/marriage vows?

Wedding vows can be read during the ceremony, especially if it is symbolic or civil, during the aperitif where there can be a moment specifically dedicated to them, during dinner/lunch. It does not matter when you read your vows, the important thing is to define the moment in advance, to be able to organise logistical matters such as the microphone, but above all to have the attention of your guests.

It is important to coordinate with the celebrant or person in charge of the ceremony to determine the exact moment when the wedding vows will be read. Also, make sure that the photographer or videographer is aware of the moment so that they can capture this special moment, these photos will always be special!
