The wedding dress code, an element not to be underestimated.
A few days ago, news came out about a wedding where a guest showed up in a floor-length white lace dress, if it wasn't it looked just like a wedding dress. Basically there were two brides in the wedding, the bride was a bit disappointed and posted some pictures of the guest. This is obviously in blatant error, but it is not so obvious what the bride and groom mean when they indicate a dress code for their wedding.
Let's start with the first rule: white is absolutely forbidden unless specified otherwise in the dress code.
But let's see what it means and how to dress when this famous “dress code” is indicated on the invitations”
The dress code is sometimes indicated on the invitations, if this is indicated it means that appropriate attire is required for the type of event being organised, this depends on the type of wedding and the preferences of the bride and groom.
But let us learn to understand what it means:
- Formal or black-tie attire: Men should wear a dark suit, a white shirt, a black tie and shiny black shoes. Women should wear a long dress or an elegant cocktail dress with high heels.
- Semi-formal or cocktail: men should wear a dark suit or a jacket and trousers, a shirt and a tie. Women should wear an elegant cocktail dress or a slightly less formal long dress.
- Informal or casual: men should wear a sports jacket or a sports suit with a shirt. Women can wear an informal dress or trousers with a shirt.
- Theme: If the wedding has a specific theme, guests should dress accordingly. For example, if the theme of the wedding is “1920s-style dresses’, guests could wear a flapper dress or a three-piece suit.
- Sometimes there is no real dress code, but an accessory or a colour is requested, in these cases it is good to follow the directions, surely the bride and groom have imagined something and indulging their request will be more than appreciated.

In general, it is always best to dress conservatively and respectfully when attending a wedding. Avoid wearing clothes that are too skimpy or too casual. And above all, avoid white dresses, as white is traditionally the colour of the bride.
I hope this article has been helpful to you in understanding how to dress, if you have any doubts when confirming your presence ask the bride and groom, surely it is better to ask than to be dressed inappropriately.
