The invitations are ready! Time to write the envelopes!
Recipients' names must be handwritten, if you or someone close to you has good handwriting, that is definitely the best option, if not, rely on a calligrapher - that could be me!
Take care to address them correctly, by reading the text on the envelope, it should be clear exactly who is invited. According to etiquette, the word “kindly” must be written before the call sign:
- Dear Sir Mario Rossi (if the invitation is for one person only)
- Dear Mr and Mrs Mario and Sara Rossi (if the couple is married)
- Dear Mr and Mrs Mario Rossi (if the couple is not married)
- Dear Mario, Sara, Roberto and Lara Rossi or Dear Mario Rossi and family (if you are inviting the whole family)
- Dear Mario Rossi and Andrea Ferrari (if the couple is homosexual)
- Dear Piero and Sofia (if a couple of friends)
They can also be shortened to:
- Dear Mr Mario Rossi
- Dear Ms Sara Rossi
- and so on....
If the wedding is informal, you could omit the “kind ones”, however, nicknames and diminutives should always be avoided.
Calligraphy work, which is always the best option in terms of final output quality, requires professionalism and time, which is why it is quite expensive. If the calligraphy service for you is out of your budget, you might opt to print the names directly on the envelopes.
The calligraphy, the paper chosen, the colours, the text... are all clues that will show your guests the formality or otherwise of the event, the attitude and dress code of your wedding.
Last tips:
- Do not plan to tackle the choice of calligraphy with closed envelopes, because these must be written on before closing them, as the writing surface must be as even and coplanar as possible.
- Same for the press, you have to print before bagging.
- Always order a few extra envelopes, it is normal to get some names wrong!
- Invitations must be delivered by hand, If it is impossible to do so, you can also send them, in which case you will also have to add the address.
If you are thinking of relying on a calligrapher, know that I might be able to help you for handwriting your envelopes.
